Tilt switches sense direction and are the simplest form of an accelerometer. They can only detect motion in one direction and work on the following principle: there is a little metal ball that rolls around inside, when its tilted upright, the ball rolls onto the contacts sticking out of end and shorts them together, turning the switch on. When it is not making contact, the switch is off. They are a handy little sensor for detecting basic movement and motion.
